We’re pleased to introduce two members who are taking up senior roles within the British Cardiovascular Society.
Vice President for Professional and Society Values
Following this year’s BCS Membership Election results, which saw Dr Louise Buchanan elected to the Vice President for Education role, her previous role of Vice President for Professional and Society Values was vacant.
Nominations were opened for eligible members to put themselves forward and we’re pleased to announce that Dr Cara Hendry has been elected unopposed to the position.
Dr Cara Hendy is a consultant cardiologist at University Hospital Wishaw, NHS Lanarkshire. She subspecialises in coronary intervention and is also the quality improvement clinical lead.
She is a senior Fellow of the BCS and has formerly been a Women in Cardiology Committee member and Vice President for Corporate Finance and Development.
She holds an LLM in Healthcare Ethics and Law, and is currently in her final year of LLB(Hons), which she is studying part time. She also has a special interest in medicolegal issues, clinical governance and patient safety.
Cara will officially take up the role from Wednesday 30 September 2026.
Director of Global Strategy
We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Shouvik Haldar to the newly created role of Director of Global Strategy. In this role, Shouvik will lead the development and delivery of the BCS’s global strategy, helping to extend the Society’s international reach, influence and impact.
Shouvik brings extensive leadership experience within the BCS. For the past decade, he has led the development and delivery of the Society’s education strategy, culminating in his term as Vice President for Education, which he has recently completed. He brings a strong track record of translating strategic priorities into successful programmes, together with a clear vision for the next phase of the Society’s international development.
As Director of Global Strategy, Shouvik will work to strengthen existing global partnerships and develop new relationships with cardiovascular societies and other organisations internationally. He will identify opportunities for collaboration, sustainable growth and income generation, while ensuring that these activities deliver value for BCS members and further strengthen the Society’s international voice and profile.
Shouvik officially took up the role on Tuesday 1 September 2026 and will serve an initial three-year term.
