Each year the BCS holds Elections to elect eligible members into vacant positions of leadership within the Society.
Electing members onto our Board as Officers or into Council or Committee roles ensures we bring clinical expertise into our decision-making committees which lead on the direction of our work, as outlined in our 3-year strategy.
Vacant positions available in 2026
This year, the following roles are vacant and will be elected to through the Elections process:
Officers on the Board
President Elect
- Work with the CEO, Officers, Board, and key stakeholders to develop the BCS’s strategy beyond 2027
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to the Society and Board, ensuring effective governance, compliance and accountability
- Be the public face of the Society, representing the BCS in the UK and overseas while raising our profile
Vice President for Education
- Drive and lead the Society’s commitment to enhancing and maintaining the highest standards in education
- Provide leadership and professional oversight to various Committees, the BCS Academy, webinar programme, Digital Knowledge Hub and Fellowship programmes
- Pioneer novel and modern approaches to education delivery
Vice President for Corporate Finance and Development Elect
- Be responsible for the financial governance of the Society, ensuring it complies with Charity Commission legislation and best practice
- Advise the CEO, Officers, Board, and Head of Finance on all financial matters relating to the Society and its activities
- Identify and develop new business opportunities and partnerships
Committee Chair Roles
Women in Cardiology (WiC) Chair and Programme Lead
- Lead and develop initiatives that promote gender equality within cardiology along with the wider Committee
- Promote awareness and address issues pertinent to WiC and build a professional network to support, acknowledge and celebrate women working in cardiology
- Facilitate the development and delivery of educational materials pertinent to the needs of women in collaboration with the Chair of the BCS Education Committee

Committee Roles
Clinical Standards Committee Member (x2)
- Advise the Board about national clinical and professional standards for individual and organisational practice in cardiovascular healthcare
- Provide expert opinion on externally produced clinical guidelines and standards, such as those produced by NICE
- Help promote patient safety, high professional standards which are consistent with guidance from the GMC and other regulatory bodies
Education Committee Member
- Develop educational programmes that meet the needs of BCS members and non members
- Ensure appropriate and innovative modes and methods of programme delivery to meet the needs of stakeholders
- Make recommendations, reports and proposals regarding BCS Educational activities, course portfolio and future plans
Environment and Sustainability Committee Member (x2)
- Influence the wider BCS strategy in this area
- Develop position statements and initiatives to promote the green agenda and prepare sessions for the BCS Annual Conference
- Work with a dynamic and motivated group
Finance Committee Member (x3)
- Act as an assurance and advisory body for the financial and administrative affairs of the Society
- Monitor standards of financial performance to ensure financial sustainability of the Society
- Protect and safeguard the assets of the charity and review the level of reserves, investments and banking arrangements
Guidelines and Practice Committee Member (x2)
- Help ensure UK cardiology practice aligns with international best practices while considering the relevance of our national needs and what is achievable within NHS frameworks
- Establish links with the wider BCS membership to coordinate opinion from national experts when responding to guidance documents
- Gain the opportunity to influence UK practice by contributing to health technology evaluation
Professional and Society Values Committee Member (x2)
- We’re looking for diversity of voice to be represented across the committee, to ensure all colleagues feel valued
- Assist in developing ways to make the Society more inclusive and how the workplace can be better for members (reducing bullying, incivility etc)
- Help prepare sessions for the BCS Annual Conference
Programme Committee Member
- Help develop the programme for the BCS Annual Conference, ensuring that it delivers the content and format as agreed by the Board
- Create thought-provoking and innovative educational sessions for learning as well as additional opportunities for networking
- Assist in making the BCS Annual Conference the ‘go to’ cardiology conference for healthcare professionals in the sector
Women in Cardiology (WiC) Committee Member (x2)
- Lead on an individual project (such as webinar series, WiC research working group, addressing sexual misconduct in the workplace, radiation protection, return-to-work buddy scheme, medical student engagement etc)
- Work with the wider committee to curate the WiC programme at the BCS Annual Conference
- Aid in the Committee’s work to increase the number of women working in cardiology and support existing colleagues
Eligibility
To stand for election to an Officer on the Board position, applicants must:
- be an Ordinary member of the Society
- have served as a member of Council, a member of a Committee of the Society, or as an Officer (or equivalent) of one of the BCS Affiliated Societies
- have the support of their employer at their normal place of work and be able to meet the time commitments set out; the BCS will contact the employer as part of the application process, so will require their contact details

- be an Ordinary or Affiliate member of the Society

In accordance with the BCS rules, members are not permitted to hold more than one elected role on the Board or committees at any one time.

Results will be announced and ratified at the BCS AGM on Wednesday 3 June 2026.
