Each year the BCS opens applications for resident doctors to become representatives on vacant positions across our Committees. 

Applications for these positions will open in March and the deadline for submissions is Wednesday 8 April 2026, 11:59pm.

Vacant positions available in 2026

This year, the following committees have vacant Resident Doctor Representative roles:

Clinical Standards Committee

  • Assist in reviewing clinical and professional standards published by national organisations
  • Be part of discussions to form advice on regulatory and professional matters, which could affect the practice of cardiovascular healthcare in the UK
  • Work with the wider committee who seek to influence the agenda set by the NHS

Digital and IT Committee

  • Help develop the BCS’s digital and IT strategy and provide advice on its direction and content
  • Assess proposals on digital/information and IT developments, governance enhancements and digital and IT technology solutions
  • Work with the committee to address areas of risks in relation to digital and IT systems

Education Committee

  • Aid in the development of the BCS educational programme to meet the needs of trainees and members
  • Undertake iterative review of course topics, numbers, feedback, financial data and make recommendations for change 
  • Work with the committee to develop new educational activities including timescales for implementation and critical review points

Environment and Sustainability Committee

  • Work with the committee to develop initiatives that promote sustainable cardiology
  • Help deliver activities pertinent to these principles and support the effective promotion of these activities
  • Aid in ensuring that BCS values crosscut all activities, are joined up and cohesive and that sustainable principles are considered appropriately across all work streams

Finance Committee

  • Consider and make recommendations to the trustees on the annual income and expenditure, and capital budgets of the Society
  • Work with the committee to protect and safeguard the assets of the charity, reviewing the level of reserves, investment portfolio and banking arrangements to protect and maintain income
  • Help ensure correct financial controls and procedures and in place to reduce risk and ensure the BCS operates within the framework set by the Charity Commission

Guidelines and Practice Committee

  • Assist in providing expert clinical review of national and international clinical guidelines and clinical practice statements
  • Work with the committee to advise the BCS Board on clinical standards and guidelines, audit, and workforce planning for cardiovascular medicine in the UK
  • Provide advice to the BCS Board about other issues relating to professional clinical practice

Heritage Committee

  • Assist in providing advice to the Executive on matters relating to the archives, particularly in relation to acquisition, loans, care, and preservation of the collection
  • Understand the evolution of cardiovascular medicine, from early cardiac catheterisation to modern imaging and interventional advances
  • Build leadership, academic credibility, and networking within the global cardiovascular community, supporting career development

Professional and Society Values Committee

  • Work with the committee to issue recommendations and proposals to the BCS Executive and Board regarding proposed activities, initiatives, and future plans
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within cardiology and deliver activities pertinent to these principles
  • Promote awareness and address issues relevant to professional and society values

Programme Committee

  • Assist in the development of the BCS Annual Conference programe
  • Work with the committee to develop any new aspects as requested by the BCS Board or Executive
  • Play a key role in the delivery of the annual event to ensure its successs

Eligibility

Cardiology Resident Doctors are encouraged to apply but applicants must also be a BCS Associate BJCA member.

You can either apply for a specific position, or send a general application for all of the available roles.

Please include an expression of interest statement, at a maximum of 250 words, explaining your motivation to be on the committee and why you should be considered.

Applications are open from Wednesday 11 March until 11:59pm on Wednesday 8 April 2026.
